The theme of the 61st Annual Scientific Meeting of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) is “Resilience in an Aging Society: Risks and Opportunities.” The meeting will convene at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor.
Symposia topics include the International Presidential Symposium: Emergency Preparedness and Older People; Resilience in Health and Illness: Personal Resources and Social Connections; Resilience in an Aging Society Meets the Resilience of Flawed Policy Ideas; International Presidential Symposium: Working Longer in an Age of Employment Flexibility: Imagining the Resilient Older Worker; Genetic Blueprint and Environment—Which has the Bigger Impact?; International Presidential Symposium: Genetic and Epigenetic Factors of Aging; The Art, Construction and Science of Aging: Promoting Health Through Gerontology/Geriatrics Education and Training; and Research on Resilience in Exercise and Diet in Older Adults: Interdisciplinary and International Perspectives.
Pre-conference workshops are scheduled for Friday, November 21, on topics including Recruitment for Minority Aging Research: An NIA Translational Conference to Promote the National Research Council’s Recommendations for Minority Aging Research; Translating Evidence-Based Dementia Caregiver Interventions to Social Service Agencies; and Women’s Health and Retirement Security: How Far We Have Come and Where We Need to Go.
Social Events
The President’s Opening Session on Friday, November 21, at 7 p.m. will feature The Capitol Steps, a Washington, D.C., comedy troupe that specializes in topical political humor. The performance will be followed by a reception.
A day of service for Habitat for Humanity with GSA members assisting on a construction project will be held on Friday, November 21.
This year’s closing session, “Congressional Briefing on Civic Engagement,” will be held Tuesday, November 25, on Capitol Hill with Senate and House staff, policy makers and advocates discussing volunteerism.
CME Credit
This meeting is designated for AMA PRA Category 1 CME credit. Registration is $345 for GSA members and $500 for nonmembers.

American Osteopathic Association - Las Vegas, NV

The theme for the American Osteopathic Association’s 113th Annual Convention and Scientific Seminar is “What Happens in Vegas…Reshapes the Nation’s Health.” The event will convene fifteen osteopathic specialty societies along with other osteopathic groups for continuing medical education activities in Las Vegas at the Palazzo and the Sands Expo and Convention Center.
The annual AIDS/HIV seminar will look at trends and future therapies in the treatment of AIDS. Convention-wide seminars of broad interest will be held on depression, minority health, women’s health, patient compliance, atherothrombosis, metabolic risk, migraine, and ADHD.
Educational sessions will cover topics including injury prevention, childhood obesity, osteopathic manipulative treatment for obstetric patients, pain management, asthma, allergic skin diseases, neonatal infection, pediatric cardiology, psoriasis, fibromyalgia, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, emerging immunizations, post-partum depression, military psychiatry, HRT and cardiovascular disease, osteopathic manipulative therapy in arthritis, and prolotherapy.
A one-day pre-convention workshop, "Avoiding Disaster: Osteopathic Approach to the Flu Pandemic," will be hosted by the American Academy of Osteopathy and the American Osteopathic Association on Saturday, October 25 from noon to 6 p.m. The workshop will review the osteopathic manipulative techniques used to facilitate patient immunity as well as vaccines, antiviral medications and other preventive measures and treatments.
Social Events
The Annual Advocates for the American Osteopathic Association will host the “Fore You Golf Tournament” at the Desert Pines Golf Club the morning of Sunday, October 26. The four-person scramble tournament’s entry fee benefits the AAOA, and includes breakfast and lunch, transportation, greens fees, and a shared golf cart.
The American Osteopathic Foundation’s Honors Ceremony, a black-tie celebration of outstanding osteopathic achievements, will be held at the House of Blues in the Mandalay Bay Casino and Resort on Sunday, October 26 from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. to benefit the William G. Anderson, D.O., Scholarship for Minority Students.
CME Credit
This meeting is designated for up to 26 credits of Category 1-A CME credit. Registration is $495 for AOA members and $595 for nonmembers. An additional $50 is charged for on-site registration.
